During the Conference in Gdańsk we would like to focus on such issues:

1. Educational paths for young people – We would like to present examples of programs for young people – some of them within the school system, from primary to secondary - dealing with the special character, potentials and challenges of the Delta areas. Programs which create awareness through innovative education and trainings, to enable young people to improve their environment by promoting the management and sustainable use of all resources. Programs to promote environmentally aware tourism and use of water routes that increase young people's knowledge and delta awareness about the environment and associated challenges, develop the necessary skills and expertise to address the challenges, and foster attitudes, motivations, and commitments. Examples of innovative education include various tools to educate the public such as print materials, websites, media campaigns, outdoor education etc.

2. Development of sustainable tourism and public awareness – We would like to focus on and gather the best practices regarding the following issues:
- ways of monitoring influx of tourist and sports vessels (kayaks, canoes, fishing boats, tourist boats, windsurfing boards, etc) in order to avoid intensive density at the expanse of environment of the Delta areas.
- ways to increase public awareness of needed restrictions and conditions which have to be imposed on tourism and economic development in the Delta areas in order to prevent the degradation of the nature.
- ways to increase public participation in the life of the Deltas in order to enhance their knowledge of the specific problems of the Delta areas and to get the public involve in looking for the solutions.

The City of Gdansk
Gdansk – a thousand-year old city in the north of Poland, has almost 0,5 million inhabitants (with Sopot and Gdynia creates metropolis of over 1 million people). Major industries are maritime, high tech, logistics, tourism, petrochemical, cosmetics. Very important academic centre educating at good level in different faculties, putting emphasis on learning foreign languages. Gdansk has a unique place in history – World War II started here and the Solidarity Movement, that made communism system to collapse, was established here. Solidarity leader Mr Lech Walesa lives here. Gdansk is also a important tourist destination surrounded by the beaches of the Baltic sea and wild nature forests.

4th Conference - Delta Awareness

The international Conference “Delta Awareness” is organised in the frame of the DeltaNet project.

Gdansk, Poland
Date: 7th – 10th May, 2012

7th May – workshops for DeltaNet Partners
8th May – International Conference
9th - study visit by boat
10th May – International Conference

Venue: Office of the Marshal of the Pomorskie Voivodeship
21/27 Okopowa St.
80-810 Gdańsk

The main goal of the Conference is to increase the public awareness about the specific characteristics of Delta regions. Politicians, stakeholders and the public in general; are having a low awareness of the special character, potential and challenges of the Delta areas. There is lack of clear communication and public participation. A higher awareness of these areas will stimulate the recognition of the Delta regions.

During the Conference in Gdańsk we will focus on such issues as:
Development of sustainable economy (including tourism) and public awareness
Plenary Session 1 – Ways of Increasing the Local Community Involvement in the Life of Deltas
Plenary Session 2 - Ways of Increasing the Local Community Involvement in the Life of Delta (best practises)
Plenary Session 3 – Sustainable Development of Deltas
Plenary Session 4 - Sustainable Development of Tourism in Deltas – best practises and recommendations from the partner regions

Public Awareness and Education

Plenary Session 5 – Education and the Public Awareness about Deltas
Plenary Session 6 – Educational Paths for Young People – examples

Location
Delta of the Vistula River
The river forms a wide delta called the Zulawy Wislane around the town of Biala Gora near Sztum, about 50 km from the mouth, splitting into two branches: the Leniwka (left) and the Nogat (right). In the city of Gdansk the Head of the Leniwka branch separates again into the Szkarpawa branch, for the purpose of flood control closed to the east with a lock. The so-called Dead Wisla divides again into the Przegalina branch flowing into Gdansk Bay. Until the 14th century the Vistula was divided into a main eastern branch, the Elbląg Vistula, and the smaller western branch, the Gdansk Vistula. Since 1371 the Vistula of Gdansk is the river's main artery. After the flood in 1840 an additional branch formed called the Smiała Wisla ("Bold Vistula"). In 1890 through 1895, additional waterworks were carried out up the Swibna.

Pomorskie Voivodeship – Region of Pomorskie

Pomorskie is one of 16 voivodeships (regions) in Poland. The region is situated in the northern part of country on the Baltic Sea coast. Almost 60% of Poland’s coastline is within Pomorskie. The region’s population is 2,2 million, which is about 5,8% of Poland’s total. A significant majority – 1,5 million – lives in cities.
With its good location the region became long ago wealthy from the sea, its fertile soil and the amber and trade routes. The gothic castle route is evidence of the presence of the Knight Orders of the Teutonic Order and the Joannit Order, while waterworks construction are legacy of Mennonite immigrants from the Netherlands.
Merchants from all over Europe used to come to the region. The thousand years old city of Gdansk has always been the most dynamic centre, and was once the main Hanza Union port and one of the richest cities in Europe.
The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were the period of Gdansk’s greatest glory. During the Reformation the city provided shelter for religious dissidents and became a symbol of tolerance. Gdansk attracted outstanding architects, painters and sculptors who transformed the city into an important centre of culture and art.
The city’s decline occurred during the time of Poland’s partition, when Gdansk became a Prussian city (in 1871 it became a German city). In 1919, the Treaty of Versailles established the Gdansk Free City Zone.
On 1 September 1939, at around 4.30 in the morning, it was here, in Gdansk, that the Second World War started with shots fired from the battleship Schleswig-Holstein.
The war and the particularly fierce struggle for liberation left Gdansk completely devastated. Its reconstruction, with the help of fully dedicated citizens, took several dozen years. Gdansk once again became the big Baltic port and regained its former splendour. Once again it drew the attention of the whole world, becoming a synonym for the liberation aspirations of Poles.
The tragic December 1970, and then August 1980 and the martial law period are the successive dates symbolizing the fight of the citizens of Gdansk against the prevailing communist regime. It was Gdansk that became the cradle of "Solidarność" which was to transform the then map of Europe. History has come full circle. Contemporary Gdansk - a half-a-million (with Sopot and Gdynia creates metropolis of over 1 million people), dynamically developing agglomeration - is vibrant with life as before and again deserves to be called "the Pearl of the North."
